How to cut your own hair with hair clippers?

2023-08-28

Step 1: Hair Preparation

To ensure a smooth self-haircut experience, start by washing and conditioning your hair. Clean hair is easier to cut as it doesn't stick together like greasy hair. Make sure your hair is completely dry and well-combed before you begin. Wet hair doesn't lay the same way as dry hair and can lead to unexpected results.

Step 2: Set Up Your Space

Choose a comfortable place to cut your hair where you have access to a mirror and running water. Section your hair according to your desired style or how you normally wear it.

Step 3: Commence Cutting

After deciding on your hairstyle, set your hair clippers to the appropriate guard length for the initial trim. Start by cutting the sides and back of your hair. Use the clippers with the blade's edge, moving from the bottom of the sides to the top. Tilt the clipper blade at an angle to create a gradual fade with the rest of your hair. Ensure both sides are even before moving to the back.

Step 4: Trim the Back

Once the sides are done, proceed to trim the back of your head. Begin at the bottom and work your way up, following the same technique used on the sides. Cutting the back can be tricky, so take your time. To ensure even cutting, hold a mirror behind you to monitor your progress. Maintain the same guard length on the back and sides, unless your style requires variation.

Step 5: Final Touches

After completing the main cut, use a mirror to inspect the sides and back for evenness. Comb your hair straight out and select a horizontal section from a similar point on each side to compare lengths. It's a good practice to cut less initially and make minor adjustments as needed.

Step 6: Tackle the Sideburns

Use your hair clippers or a razor to trim your sideburns, starting from the bottom and moving upwards to your desired length. The natural depression below your cheekbone can guide you in determining the bottom position. Check that both sideburns are the same length by placing your fingers below each one.
